Mission and objectives

The Netherlands Institute for Heritage helps generate cultural capital based on its heritage-wide mission and targets.

Mission
The Netherlands Institute for Heritage endeavours to:

  • enhance the position of cultural heritage in society
  • emphasise the importance and meaning of cultural heritage in general, and
  • of archaeology, archives, historic buildings and monuments, and museums in particular

As a sector institute, it focuses on:

  • professional heritage institutions
  • private organisations
  • education
  • media
  • Dutch and foreign politicians

The Netherlands Institute for Heritage is a key expert and liaison for public administrators.

Targets
The Netherlands Institute for Heritage's mission is based on three targets:
1. Envisioning: reinforcing the position of heritage in society
Dutch society is becoming more concerned about its cultural heritage. There is enormous potential, but the various subsectors and the sector as a whole make inadequate use of the opportunities available. The Netherlands Institute for Heritage wishes to expand its vision of heritage as contributing to the vibrancy of our cultural capital, not only within the sector, but at cross-sector level.

It will do that by:

  • raising the profile of the heritage sector
  • keying into new trends and developments
  • encouraging the use of heritage

2. Encouraging: innovative developments
Innovation is vital to every sector that wishes to anticipate events and changes in society. The Netherlands Institute for Heritage drives and encourages innovation and focuses on collective promotion by developing creative methods that will showcase heritage using contemporary tools and channels.

Key targets:

  • increasing public appeal
  • digitisation and e-culture
  • heritage education

3. Linking: taking on a platform function
Heritage institutions need to be able to share what they know and have experienced with one another. They need a basis of support in order to encourage innovation. Before the position of the heritage sector in society can improve, it must collaborate more closely from within. The Netherlands Institute for Heritage wishes to continue playing a role as a platform at subsector level and also develop into a sector-wide platform. Its ambition is to be the first to know what is happening in the heritage sector. In that way, it can alert the sector, society and government to new developments, link the various parties, and play a role of lasting significance.
