A new life for historic cultural landscape: former plantations

ICOMOS Committee on Shared Built Heritage and the Netherlands Institute for Heritage organise 18th - 23st October 2010 a conference on the future use of former colonial plantations. Focus is on the Commewijne plantation area in Suriname, where the conference takes place.

The Conference

The Conference is organised in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the ICOMOS Committee on Shared Built Heritage. Papers will be presented by participants from the Caribean area and other parts of the world, showing examples and best practises on the re-use of former plantations. The economic value now is quite different from a hundred years ago, but the intrinsic value of the plantation structure for the identity of the people is unmistaken. How can this asset be preserved by re-use or by creative planning?
